Today’s program will introduce you to the many ways that you can get involved volunteering at Normandale Community College. Our guests are planning to briefly discuss the Academic Support Centers—who they are and what they do. Then, we are going to briefly discuss how the rotary members can be involved and/or support the work we do.
Beena Cook is currently serving as the Director of Academic Support Services. She has been a dedicated member of the Normandale Community College community since July 2013. Beena oversees a range of essential programs, including tutoring and the writing center, supplemental instruction, and ESL support. Additionally, Beena manages the free laptop program for students and supervises developmental education supports through the math center, as well as for a cohort of students in a developmental education program called “Npowered.”
Beena is joined by Dr. Megan Shakow, who is the Writing Center Coordinator at Normandale Community College, where she trains and supervises peer and volunteer writing tutors and creates programming and resources to support reading and writing across the college. Before working at the Writing Center, she taught English at the high school and college levels, including at Normandale. Fun fact: In 1998-99, she was a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar in Leeds, England, where she completed an MA in Commonwealth and Postcolonial Literature and visited many Rotary clubs.
