The importance of a safe home: Onward provides transitional housing and support to young adults experiencing homelessness or housing instability. In this presentation, Executive Director Tricia Wright will share how Onward was founded, its unique approach, and stories of resilience from the young people it serves. Attendees will gain insight into the impact of stable housing, the growing need for services like Onward’s, and ways the community can engage with and support this important work. Tricia Wright serves as the first Executive Director of Onward, stepping into the role in April 2022 after two years of board service. With 17 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, she has served as a strategic advisor, consultant, organizational leader, and board member—helping mission-driven organizations grow and strengthen their impact. Tricia holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, where she focused on organizational leadership and social entrepreneurship. A strategic and values-driven leader, she is passionate about driving community change and expanding opportunities for young adults.

We welcomed Sandhya Gupta back to Minnesota and her home club on July 14th. It was a great pleasure to hear the update on the wonderful work that is being done through Aavishkaar to further children’s STEM education and empower young women to become independent. Aavishkaar works in rural areas of India to enhance STEM (math and science) training for teachers in these areas. Math has long been a scary concept for students and teachers in these communities. Aavishkaar training gives teachers additional teaching tools to make learning math and science concepts fun through hands-on learning games. Sandhya introduced us to several young women who have been participating in the Aavishkaar programs throughout the past several years and are now furthering their skills through Masters level education programs and taking their skills out to communities throughout India to share with other teachers. Her program is working to change the norms within India for women where 70% of teachers lack content mastery on top of a significant shortage of teachers. And 57% of high school age students can’t divide. Where women make up less than 1/3 of the STEM field workforce and 200 million women are confined to their homes lacking work skills. Enabling more women in STEM skills will make a better livelihood possible. Our Rotary Club will be participating with Sandhya in a District Grant this year empowering women STEM teachers to mentor other teachers at the middle and high school level. These 75 teachers will impact 600+ other teachers who will go on to reach 18,000 students giving all a new appreciation and enjoyment of their math and science curriculum. Together through Rotary.

Housing in Action is leading the fight for housing justice by creating dignified, affordable rental and home ownership opportunities. Through advocacy and community engagement, they are co-creating trusting relationships and strong communities that have the power to transform neighborhoods. Temi Ogunrinde is the Equity and Engagement Director at Housing in Action (formerly Urban Homeworks). Temi works on policy, community engagement and pathways to home ownership. When asked why she does this work she says, "I firmly believe that dignified housing is a right, not a luxury, and that everyone should be afforded the opportunities to own a home. I wanted to be intentional of working in spaces that fight for this right. I chose to work for Housing in Action specifically because it’s important that the work we do is unapologetically centered on community. We commit to doing this work alongside community, with great humility and care and that is why this is where I want to be."

At our May 19th Monday luncheon we learned about Excel Energy from Michelle Swanson, their Community Relations Manager. Excel is an investor owned utility. We learned that they operate in 8 states throughout the central United States. They serve 3.8 million electricity customers and over 2.2 million natural gas customers. In Bloomington they serve 45,000 electricity customers.

Many of us are familiar with Artistry, having attended their theater performances over the past several years. We may not be as familiar with the many other offerings available through Artistry. Kelly Foster Warder is their Executive Artistic Director. She will be our guest speaker to share will share an update of the programming and future of Artistry with gratitude to Rotary for their support. Kelly has been leading artistic initiatives across various theater organizations for over thirty years. She is a passionate arts leader, skilled in areas of planning, fundraising, program management, and community engagement initiatives. Her aim is to create an artistic vision that captivates; foster creative environments that inspire; and deliver memorable performances that resonate. Kelly joined Artistry in September, 2022. She also has skills as a choreographer and a director as well as a free lance consultant.

On April 14th Rotarians Jackie Johnston and Sara Johnston were our guests to update our club about North Star Rotary Youth Exchange. Youth Exchange is one of Rotary International’s nine structured programs. It is designed to foster fellowship and goodwill within community. Since world peace is one of the most important issues for us today, Youth Exchange helps people of different cultures get to know one another on a personal level, like family.

Phillip Sexton is the owner of The Makers Den, a 3D Printing company. Phillip was introduced to 3D printing a decade ago when one of his students built a printer for their senior project. After acquiring his own printer five years later, he accidentally sold his first print two years ago, sparking a promising side hustle. He opened 'The Makers Den,' offering ready-made prints, custom designs, 3D printing classes catering to specific ages and skill levels, and the tools and materials to help others "Build Your Future." While he often regrets leaving the classroom, Phillip remains passionate about teaching how with 3D printing the only limitation is your imagination. If you are interested in 3D printing or learning more about 3D printing, you won’t want to miss this program. The Makers Den offers a variety of options centering on 3D printing including top quality printers, accessories, materials, and classes. They also sell a variety of novelty 3D prints. On February 10th we were introduced to a new program for young people ages 16 to 24 here in our city. Bloom in Bloomington Internship Program is lead by Program Facilitator Warsan Artan. Warsan gave us an overview of the program which is designed to give a diverse cross section of young people in our city an introduction to the workplace and work experience that will put them on track for a promising career. We also heard from Isela Mendiola who was an intern with the City of Bloomington in a previous group. She learned many skills and was able to network with city and corporate leaders. Through this she was offered a permanent position as an Office Support Specialist for the city. How can Rotary help: They need corporate partners especially within the healthcare and technology professions. Rotarians can also spread the word as they network with other professionals. You can make connections through social media, Instagram, or through our Rotaract club.

Karyn Arazi, President of the Bloomington Rotary Club Foundation presented four Grants this month on behalf of the Bloomington Noon Rotary Club’s STRIVE Scholarship Program. Three grants are for scholarships to Bloomington Kennedy and Bloomington Jefferson graduates who are pursuing higher education. And, one grant is to be used for scholarships for students in the Bloomington Middle School Sports Programs. These scholarships to be presented over at least the next 5 years. Tiffany Shermak accepted a check for $50,000 for scholarships through the Education Foundation of Bloomington to immediate graduates of both high schools. Plus she accepted a check for $11,000 for Middle School Sports scholarships through the Education Foundation of Bloomington’s Student Success Stipends. Jane Fenton accepted a check for $25,000 for scholarships through the Normandale Community College Foundation to Bloomington grads. And, $25,000 was awarded to Hennepin Technical College for scholarships to Bloomington grads of any age.

On January 27th our noon meeting hosted Anthony Sasso sharing his stories and tips on Creating Memories with Family through Travel. Why is Tony so passionate about travel? He believes in the value of family vacations and has taken his kids on trips all over the world. What are the benefits of travel? Less stress, improved mental health, improved heart health, strengthened relationships, and physical exercise...all of which can help increase one’s life span. And, when you return, you experience enhanced productivity with improved focus, creativity and motivation. The mission of the Jefferson Athletic Foundation (JAF) is to sustain and promote the participation of Jefferson High School students in athletic programs. On December 2nd, our guest was Dan Tranter, Supervisor of the Indoor Air Unit at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). He educated us on Indoor Air Hazards. Dan spoke on how to protect ourselves and our homes from the dangers of Radon, Mold, and Carbon Monoxide. Dr. Jones, Professor of Anthropology, is here to make the case for continued funding for the eradication of Polio in the world.

Southwest Metro Rotary Clubs Veterans Day luncheon 2024
On October 28th, Rotarian Becky Amble shared How to use AI. The concept of Artificial Intelligence was not new to us, but learning the many ways it can be used and is being used surprised many of us. Becky is a leader in Strategic Marketing and Artificial Intelligence, soon to be a Certified AI Consultant. Becky helps people to identify how they can use AI. She called it “AI-ifying”. She has multiple books available and YouTube videos to help people learn to use AI. We see AI being used everywhere now. Most of us are a little slow in implementing this tool because the concept can overwhelm us with its many possibilities. We are also hesitant because it appears to override the human experience, and we are resistant to this kind of change. We still have no concept of the impact AI will have on our everyday lives. AI is a transformative tool. It is being used in business in a number of ways to assist people in their work load; help businesses save implementation expenses; and help streamline workflow. Business-es using it are experiencing faster growth. Becky introduced us to some examples of Chatbots, Large Language Models; media creation; and how one can personalize AI to represent themselves. She provided several examples of AI software currently available and how it might be used in our work settings. One example would be creating a series of prompts or notes on a subject then asking ChatGPT to write a coherent paragraph based on these prompts. It appears that a skill we will need in the future is being able to identify the bones of a subject or project, articulate them, and then ask AI to fill in the body. Once filled in, we will need to be able to clarify and refine details and assure that our information is accurate. Becky showed us video creation using an avatar. She showed us how AI can translate anything you might want to say in a video into any language and make it look like you are really talking in that lan-guage. She listed several software programs currently available like ChatGPT, CoPilot, Jasper, Syn-thesia, VEED.ID, Zap and many others.

October 14th, we heard more on Educating Youth About Human Trafficking. Jessica Bartholomew is the Executive Director of Anti Child Trafficking United (A.C.T. United). Her program today started where Karen Walkowski’s program on Human Trafficking and Rotary left off, giving us a detailed understanding of the issues our youth here in Bloomington and greater Minnesota are facing. A.C.T. United was started in 2015 to implement sustainable action that will impact child trafficking: Education! The two fastest growing crimes affecting our youth are sex trafficking and sextortion, which we learned was finding something that will cause a person to be afraid of it being disseminated to the public. The fear is the controlling element in the relationship. The xtortion is to trade the “something” for sex or for money. We learned some disturbing statistics. 50% of kids trafficked are trafficked by family members. In 2022, the MDH MN Student Survey showed 4,700 students in Minnesota had experienced a trafficking type of incident. Not all school districts participate in this survey. Throughout the state, between 1 to 2% of all students admit trading sex. Girls and Boys are equally victimized. 95% of teens admitted having sent an inappropriate photo of themselves to someone else. The phone in their pocket is the entry point for trafficking and sextortion with 83% of all cases starting online. A.C.T. United provides community outreach in many forms. Bloomington Noon Rotary: Educating Youth About Human Trafficking
Human Trafficking or Human Slavery is the second largest illegal industry in the world and is growing dramatically. A new victim is trafficked every 4 seconds somewhere in the world. While it seems like a hopeless problem, we believe that Rotary is uniquely positioned to end this horrific human rights travesty in the same way that Rotary has eradicated polio (almost!). Come to learn more about this issue AND what your Rotary club can do to help end it in your community and around the world. Karen Walkowski joined Rotary in 2012 because of Rotary’s commitment to international projects. She is a retired healthcare executive with over 40 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Rotary International has been raising awareness around Human Slavery which has captured her passion as both a global and local issue. She is the past president of her local Rotary club in Excelsior. In 2017 she was asked to lead the Rotary Initiative to end Human Trafficking in Minnesota where she worked with over 150 other Rotary clubs in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota and over 6000 other Rotarians. In May of 2020, she helped launch a new cause-based Global Rotary Club focusing on Ending Human Trafficking and served as the Charter President of the club from 2020-2022. She truly believes that Rotary can end Human Trafficking and is honored to be part of this solution.

Wilderness Inquiry’s mission is to connect people of all ages backgrounds, identities, and abilities through shared outdoor adventures so that all people can equitably experience the benefits of time spent in nature. They are headquartered in the Twin Cities, but operate globally. They collaborate with hundreds of local, national and international organizations to assure they are accessible, inclusive and eco-friendly, all while helping every participant engage with the outdoors. Erika Rivers is the Executive Director of Wilderness Inquiry. She joined them in 2021. She is passionate about breaking down barriers to accessing the outdoors and connecting all people to the health, wellness and social benefits of active, nature-based recreation. She oversees a $6.9 million annual budget and a staff of 90+ full and seasonal employees. Prior to joining Wilderness Inquiry, she was Director of the Parks and Trails Division at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for 17 years as a conservation biologist. In 2021, she was elected president of the National Association of State Park Directors. She holds a Ph.D. in Conservation Biology and a B.A. in Journalism/Russian Studies from the UofM. Her outdoor interests include hiking, camping, hunting and fishing.
Bloomington Noon Rotary - Wilderness Inquiry
Dr. Abul Sharah has spoken to us many times about his work in India. This week we heard about an expansion of the same work Abul has been doing in India. This new clinic is being established in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala. Abul always dreamed about expansion of his work and he has finally been able to achieve this dream. The program they have been establishing in Guatemala is much like his Prevention Program at International Village Clinic in India. The program in India is currently working with about 60 villages. They provide a nutrition program for children and pregnant women; a vaccination program for polio, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis, cholera and other diseases. Their maternity services include doctor visits, nutrition and hygiene instruction. Their work with the children who are born under this program monitors the child’s growth for at least the first five years. This preventive program has made a significant difference in the lives of the children in these villages. Abul is hoping for similar results in the small villages surrounding San Lucas Toliman in Guatemala. Abul retired from his corporate life early and followed his dream to help the poor villages of Uttar Pradesh, India, and establish a medical clinic. Abul has indicated that he is dedicating the rest of his life to this work. And, today, he is seeing his dreams coming to life as well in Guatemala.

On August 12th, Past District Holly Callen introduced us to , Bravo Zulu House, the FIRST and ONLY ALL-VETERAN sober living home in the U.S. helping veterans deal with the combined problems of PTSD and chemical dependency. We also welcomed a special guest, Veteran Jack Zimmerman, the chair of the Advisory Board for Bravo Zulu. To Navy vets, Bravo Zulu means Well Done! Our guest, Jack Zimmerman was deployed with the 101st Airborne Division when on a routine mission, he stepped on an IUD. Both arms and both legs had significant injuries. He was medevacked off the field. He spent 6 days in a coma and 8 weeks in the hospital. When he was eventually released from the VA, he found it extremely difficult to adjust to outside life. This experience made him want to find a way to help others and find a bridge between treatment and real life. He wanted to give back to others to be worthy of the help he received in saving his life. Thus his work with Bravo Zulu House. Bravo Zulu House has "Declared War on PTSD!"- one of the main causes of suicide among our veterans. There are over 360,000 veterans who have been diagnosed with PTSD and addiction. Since 9-11, 7,500 active military have died in combat, training, and other accidents, while 37,000 Veterans have committed suicide. That is 22 veterans committing suicide every day. There were no other shelter homes geared just to veterans trying to recover from PTSD and addiction. Bravo Zulu is a 501(c)3 organization that will offer private rooms, PTSD counseling, spiritual counseling, hydroponic farming, and dog therapy. Their property is in Winnebago, MN. It is supported by veterans and veterans organizations. It is partnering with the Mayo Clinic and other vet oriented organizations. To qualify a vet must have served a minimum of 181 days and be referred from a formal treatment program. Vets who live there will work to maintain and farm the home. They will pay $600 per month, fix their own meals and keep the home clean. There will be room for 12 residents. All residents will need to either volunteer or work 30 hours per week. District 5950 is finding ways to ensure that no veteran is ever turned away from Bravo Zulu House because of their disability by funding a grant for a wheel chair lift to their second floor. Sharon brought with her that vibrant personality that she is known for as she talked a little bit about her upbringing growing up in the Congo and traveling. She gained first hand knowledge of the tropical diseases these communities live with and that teaching and helping others was important. Sharon set her goal in Rotary to become District Governor and began her road to that goal 12 years ago when she was the President of her club, the City of Lakes Rotary. She is now a member of Minneapolis #9. Working in the financial industry, she has been very successful being able to eventually buy out her boss and now owns her own firm. Sharon praised Bloomington Noon as a fundraising club and also mentioned how many of our members are leaders within the District. All total, our club has donated $1,402,807 to The Rotary Foundation since our charter. District 5950 is #10 in the world in fundraising and Bloomington Noon has certainly been a part of that. Sharon’s goals for the year include continuing the triple leadership role of her predecessor. She emphasized Rotary’s work on Clean Water around the world. She wants clubs to concentrate on membership (possibly through sub-clubs) and public relations. She challenged our club to adopt multiple international clubs so we can welcome them in 2029 at the International Convention.

Sandhya Gupta is the founder of Aavishkaar - A Center for Science, Maths, Arts and Technology, one of our two India Global Grant initiatives. The center aims to nurture curiosity, creativity and critical thinking through science and math education. The program aims to create thinking classrooms and active learning through models, experiments, experiences and projects. Aavishkaar strives to make quality education accessible to all irrespective of social or economic background. Sandhya’s programs have once again this year been granted a District Global Grant distributing The Rotary Foundation grant dollars through our the help of our club. Sandhya is an electrical engineer, a math enthusiast and a women's education advocate. She has a PhD in Electrical Engineering (Semiconductor) from Iowa State University (Iowa, USA) with several publications and patents. She has been an academic achiever, with many awards. She also has a Master’s in Public Affairs from the Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota.

Abijah's is a unique equine-experiential mental health program. Offtrack thoroughbreds find purposeful retirement while simultaneously contributing to life changing outcomes for individuals grappling with PTSD, addiction, trauma, depression, and anxiety. By engaging in therapeutic interactions with these majestic animals, clients experience a unique and effective form of healing. Sally Mixon is the founder of Abijah's. She has spent over a decade facilitating sessions and raising awareness of the healing power of horses. She is an exercise rider at racetracks around the country and advocates for thoroughbreds through speaking and fundraising.

Dr. David Langemo completed his doctoral research on destructive leaders in organizations. He is joined us to share how destructive leaders negatively affect an organization financially. He stays away from religion, politics, psychology, and government issues. He is the Founder and President of Long Meadow Leadership, LLC. He has a bachelor's degree in Music Education, a master's in Organizational Management, and a doctorate in Business Administration with a specialization in Leadership. He has over 20 years in IT, higher education, and nonprofit leadership experience. He is a certified Interim Executive Director of Nonprofits and is currently writing a book about leadership from a child’s perspective. He lives in south Minneapolis with his husband Drew, dog Mabel, and cat Reggie. He is proud to be a founding member of the MN Pride Rotary Club!
Destructive Leaders in an Organization
Climate scientists were correct about the progression of warming and cli- mate change 40 years ago. They know much more now, and are telling us clearly, we will ruin the future for our kids/grandkids UNLESS we ALL take action now, to move our federal reps. to action and to reduce our own car- bon footprint. Our hope depends on us all doing our part. Learn more about Citizen’s Climate Lobby and become part of the solution. Alan Anderson has been a Rotarian with Northfield Rotary for many years. He is a Paul Harris Fellow and a member of Rotary International’s Environmental Sustainability Action Group. In 2017, his club started a Rotary Climate Action Team. Alan has a BA in Wildlife Science and Management. He was an executive with the Scouts for 34 years. After retiring, he took a course on the Science of Climate Change from MIT and he has presented over 180 times on the subject. The mission of Birth With Dignity is to educate, support, and equip nurses and midwives of Uganda to improve care for patients and families with high-risk perinatal needs with the goal of decreasing maternal and neonatal deaths, as well as caring for families with perinatal loss. Sue’s nursing and teaching career spans over 35 years. Sue has done research in the area of perinatal bereavement and works as a Perinatal Nurse Navigator at Maple Grove Hospital, with families who have suffered the early or late loss of a baby. She is also an adjunct nursing professor at Bethel University. Sue is currently serving on the board with the International Stillbirth Alliance, a global stillbirth organization. She resides in the Twin Cities of Minnesota with her husband and two grown children.

Today, Yoch gave us a comparison between the two men and how elements in their lives affected their leadership creating one Patriot and one Traitor. Ulie Seal, the Bloomington Fire Chief, was a terrific host at our Vocational Visit to Fire Station #3 here in Bloomington. Bloomington’s fire department started in 1947 with the first station at 95th and Garfield after a large fire at Lyndale and 95th street. It has grown to six station houses and a staff of about 150. We learned that the Bloomington model for fire protection using 100% on-call paid staff for a city this large was the last department to move away from this to a hybrid model of full and part-time paid staff this year.

Reach Out and Read Seeks to give young children a foundation for success through the powerful effects of reading and sharing a story with a loved one. For the past 35 years, their focus has been on early childhood literacy. In the first years of life, a child forms a million+ new neural connections per second. A child’s brain architecture is built in early childhood. Positive and stimulating experiences prepare a child to be open to new things and excited to learn. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) can dramatically affect lifelong health and learning outcomes. Minnesota has significant opportunity and achievement gaps by race and income. Much of this takes root before children even enter school. Reach Out and Read (RORMN) works to address this by collaborating with a network of over 300 medical clinics. They know that books are an essential tool to build children’s brains and to build family bonds. Children develop improved language and listening skills, have stronger emotional connections, and gain a love of reading through books. RORMN provides age and developmentally appropriate books for doctors to present to their child patients at annual visits. RORMN trains doctors in how to share with parents about the importance of reading with their child. By the time a child has moved through their preschool years, they hopefully will have collected a small library and an enjoyment of reading. RORMN has given out 297,000 books in 17 languages. They are now working with NICU departments as well and are helping to share information on local libraries and how to access books. Ambassador Ladu Jada Gubek shared his story...from Blindness to Leadership. Ladu Gubek was born in 1974, in Juba, South Sudan. As a child he contracted measles and at the age of 10 was totally blind. His father rejected him as being helpless and dependent because there were many other children to concentrate on. Ladu learned of a church organization that worked with blind children so joined them. Ladu believed in himself, and talked an elementary school into letting him learn with the children. He proved himself worthy to stay. He found an American who would pay his school fees and got his education. He was moving up in the community. Then, war broke out in South Sudan. He knew he either needed to accept defeat or fight for a future and freedom. He became a refugee to the USA. In 2005 a peace agreement was reached and Ladu was asked to return to help the new government. Two years into independence, the liberators had become oppressors and their power led to corruption and abuse. Asked about why so much trouble in South Sudan, Ladu explained that it is made up of 64 tribes, 1 President, and 5 Vice Presidents. Tensions run very high. There are many opinions on what is important and how one should govern and set rules. Ladu saw first-hand mistreatment of children and women by the government. He asks himself if “life is only what you settle for, or must you consider others”, the rest of the world. He has dedicated his life to fighting for rights for others and continues that pursuit here in the US. When he dies he wants to leave the world better off than when he arrived. Today, Ladu has started a new initiative providing financial education to new immigrants in the community. He sees the vicious cycle of debt moving from one generation to the next and never allowing the family to move up into self-sufficiency. He is working to reverse it. His group has seven different workshops beginning with basic financial information and ultimately helping people learn how to thrive financially.

Semper Fi Flo is a not for profit foundation (501(c)3) helping active duty military members, veterans, and their families feel valued and supported throughout the year. They strive to contribute to the well-being and happiness of those who have served our country with honor through care packages and holiday gifting missions that have benefitted 5,000+ active military, veterans and families since 2016. Molly Crandall Ambrose volunteers as their Executive Director. Molly was raised in south Minneapolis. She has a degree in Recreation Management from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse. She taught tennis at North- west Racquet, Swim and Health Clubs (now Lifetime Fitness) and Williston Tennis Center over a 30 year career. Molly is currently retired due to a shoulder injury. She and her husband, Tim, have 4 adult children and 4 dogs (3 Golden Retrievers and a Great Bernese Mountain dog). They have lived in Chanhassen for 25 years and St. Louis Park before that. Molly is a baker of custom sugar cookies as her “income job” and volunteers in her position with Semper Fi Flo Foundation. This year Semper Fi Flo Foundation is shipping 400 care packages to deployed military. They have adopted 11 families and the Silver Bay Veteran Home is their Vet Home this year.

Southwest Metro Rotary Clubs Veterans Day Luncheon 2023
As part of the Strategic Plan for Bloomington, the city is placing on the ballot this fall three questions to authorize a half-percent local option sales tax to finance $155 million in bonds to fund three major community projects for better health, wellness, athletics, recreation and improved natural areas. The questions relate to improvements to community health and wellness through a new Public Health and Community Center, improvements to the Bloomington Ice Garden, and enhancements to the Nine Mile Creek Corridor and Moir/Central Park. Bloomington Assistant City Manager Mike Sable shared details about the proposals, the source of the tax revenue, and how the tax revenue will be used.

Rotarian Abul Sharah updated us on the International Village Clinic (IVC) and World Class English School (WCES). The first land was purchased in 2002. He added a mobile clinic that served villagers within those first couple of years. By the fourth year, they had built their initial clinic buildings and have been revising and growing ever since. Currently, they are operating totally on solar power and added a residential building plus an individual ward for both men and women. Over the past three years the curative program has treated over 40,000 people and have only referred 21 cases to the city hospital hours away. Ever since Abul first started organizing IVC, our club has provided Charitable Partner grants or participated in District Grants that help fund the work there. Their preventive program works with 60+ villages in the rural area of Uttar Pradesh in Eastern India. They provide integrated preventive health care which includes vitamin supplements, vaccinations, formalized health education, and family planning. They are following 1,700 children (birth to age 5) with health checkups and vitamins. Pregnant women receive vitamin supplements. Local women are trained as health educators. All in all, over 200,000 people are served each year on their annual budget of $150,000. Six years ago, WCES was added as part of the overall project. They leased and updated their first building which housed 4 classes. Four years ago, they began construction on a new class building. They now operate a tuition based school with 60 staff people and 152 children in three preschool grades plus grades 1, 2, and 3. Abul recently visited an area in Guatemala with no technological services and no medical services and hopes to start a similar program there. See page 5 RIB to register for their annual fundraiser.
International Village Clinic
Kate Bispala of Harriet and Alice was our guest today to tell her story about starting up her entrepreneurial Edina business. The name honors two grandmothers who played a significant role in the lives of the owners. The business centers on Kate’s love of natural fabrics and knitting skills that she developed in her youth. Plus, in order to encourage a broader clientele, she added unique gift items. Kate grew up in Richfield and achieved her teaching credentials at UMD. She taught in St. Louis Park taking on the challenge of teaching the most difficult students and those who needed extra help. Kate believes that relationships are the key to success in whatever she tackles. She takes after her father who was an entrepreneur, always trying something new. So, upon turning 40, Kate evaluated her options and due to the constraints on her time required by her teaching career, she chose to leave the profession and move to the other career recommendation that came from her career inventory, retail! She sought counsel from the owner of a local yarn store and decided she could use her love of yarn and knitting and her teaching skills and opened her store in the 50th and France area in June of 2017. Then the roadblocks to success began. Construction in the area, water coming from the ceil- ing, and parking constraints make it harder for her new startup to gain footing. She knew she need- ed to keep a positive attitude. She developed an online presence to get people to know about her. By the beginning of 2020, the construction ended and she thought the business was now in a position to take off! Then, Covid hit. Luckily, she had started the online presence, so found ways to expand to online sales and even some remote problem solving for customers. Covid business grants helped her pay rent and keep employees paid. Believing relationships are the most important part of any endeavor, Kate concentrated her efforts on building them with her clients. She enjoys getting to know clients personally, experiencing their joys and their sorrows. She sponsors participation in charitable efforts like “Hats for the Homeless” and “Hat not Hate”, providing hundreds of hats for these charities. After six years, they are now expand- ing and have added classroom space so she can now teach and continue building these relation- ships.

Jamie Verbrugge introduced us to the Ukrainian Youth Exchange several years ago. Here are the 2022 Ukrainian Youth Exchange students at Bloomington Civic Plaza with him. YouLEAD stands for Youth Leadership Engagement and Development Program. The program provides the opportunity for 30 Ukrainian teens from across the country to spend five weeks in Minnesota to learn and grow as future leaders. Ukrainian participants will be engaged in intensive learning, building relationships and creating partnerships with Minnesota Youth and community organizations, Minnesota local governments and schools, and the Minnesota Ukrainian community. Richard Fursman will join us to share about this year’s group and their plans. Heisan Organization Development and Change expert. He has helped hundreds of organizations develop and implement strategy by facilitating discussions and aligning strategy with action planning, He has worked with local governments in both the USA and Ukraine. YouLEAD Ukranian Youth Exchange
Courage Kenny provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, drivers assessments, back to work training and much more to folks with disabilities. The Sports & Recreation Department works to remove barriers and get people moving beyond their physical limitations. They offer a wide range of sporting options that allow folks to play and compete including cycling, track, water and snow skiing, baseball and basketball. Today, Cornerstone has expanded to several communities and Minneapolis and also concentrates on human trafficking and general crime. We had a tremendously interesting program Monday about “The Banking Industry” from Tom Bengtson, President of NFR Communications, Inc. who has an in depth understanding of the banking industry and how it works. Bengtson took us through the recent crisis including an historical picture of where it all started as far back as 2008. It appears that interest rates, the pandemic, the government infusion of dollars, inflation, and the FDIC all played a role. Bengtson’s summary indicated that here in the Midwest, most banks are funded by diverse pools of core deposits with uninsured deposits protected by pledged collateral so the likelihood of liquidity risk mismanagement or asset risk mismanagement is less likely. And, in the future we should see a possible hybrid type of FDIC banking insurance that helps to cover 100% of smaller deposits un- der $250,000 and to cover a percentage portion of larger deposits. He also recommended that a program called EDIE at www.FDIC.gov can help to show one how to increase one’s deposit protection if you have larger deposits. Diversify your deposits and get to know your banker well.
The Banking Industry
We distributed a Charitable Partner Grant today to Normandale Community College. Jane Fenton and Telly Mamayek, the Vice President of Advancement at NCC, accepted the grant. Mamayek gave us an overview of NCC’s mission, vision, and values all centered around students, the community, and an equitable world. Our grant dollars will be used for the Academy of Math and Science (AMS) at Norman- dale where marginalized students are provided supports to success in their STEM education. We are an original funder for AMS through the NCC Foundation. Each student in the program is given a $1,000 scholarship. These students are 48% female, 56% of color, 48% low income, and 41% first generation college students within the family. With this help, students maintain an average 3.17 cumulative GPA. We are helping NCC to meet the needs of their students, however they come into the college. Our second grant went to Oasis For Youth whose services assist the young people in our community ages 16 to early 20’s who are experiencing homelessness. Oasis is the only youth serving provider in our area offering upstream solutions to youth before they experience homeless- ness and if a young person does experience homelessness, Oasis offers immediate crisis management and coordinated entry assessments. Our dollars will specifically help them offer transportation assistance. Jasmyn Green, Oasis Director, told us that the youth involved with Oasis take part in all of the decisions Oasis makes through their Youth Advisory Board. Oasis offers a place for youth to gather. They help youth to get into foster housing, or connected with Public Health and Legal help when needed. Their offices are at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church and the Mall of America. 50% of the 361 young people they assisted last year were both working and continuing their education. 1/4 of them identify LGBTQ+ and 86% are of color.

This week we had a vocational visit to our longstanding charitable partner – VEAP (Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People). VEAP’s CEO and fellow Rotarian Kari Thompson gave us an overview of VEAP’s mission, vision and team. Jessica Hering, VEAP’s Social Services Director gave us an overview of VEAP’s social pro- grams. Paul Jacobson, VEAP’s Basic Needs Director and Karen Hancock, VEAP’s Volunteer Manager, spoke about their respective roles within VEAP well. VEAP was founded in 1974 and has become the largest food panty in the Twin Cities providing access to healthy foods, social services, and financial assistance. 49% of VEAP’s clients live in Bloomington, 23% from Richfield,16% from Minneapolis, and 12% from other suburbs or unknown. VEAP has seen a marked increase in use in 2022 with a 56% increased use of their mobile pantry, 28% increased use of their on-site visits, and 103% increased use of their home deliveries.

“Artistry is starting a new chapter.”, said Karin Nordstrom, member of their Board of Directors, as she introduced our guest, Kelli Foster Warder, the new Acting Executive Director at Artistry. Their Co-Artistic Director, Allyson Richert also joined us. Both shared sincere thanks to the many Rotarians who have supported Artistry and attended productions, and to the Club as a whole that has included Artistry as a Charitable Partner for several years. Artistry has always been a launching pad for local professionals in all areas of the arts including our speaker Kelli Foster Warder who tap danced in the Artistry production of 42nd Street before going on to a successful career in theater. Kelli explained a little about what happened recently with Artistry. During Covid, liabilities became larger than Artistry’s ability to pay them. A change was needed. Artistry has partnered with Propel Nonprofits to right its course. With new leadership today, Artistry has pared back its productions of both live theater and exhibitions of local artists. With financial assistance from Propel, donors, and the city, Artistry has now paid all of their actors/artists and have either paid or negotiated down 78% of their liabilities. Propel is working with the Board and leadership in training on financial accountability and practices. Staffing has moved from 15 paid staff to 5 today. The budget has moved from $2.3M to $1.4M. And, their new theater production of Pajama Game is on track to start this month. Their galleries are continually rotating new exhibits, and limited educational programs are being planned.
Artistry Update
When the pandemic hit, Middle School sports in Bloomington took a hit. With distance learning and budget cuts, after school athletic offerings were eliminated in 2020-2021. In response to a growing need for structured after school activities, a desire to improve school climate, and provide students with a greater sense of belonging, the Bloomington School Board approved a plan to expand after school sporting activities for these students. Generous grants from the Bloomington Noon Rotary Foundation and ESSER funds are providing the funds necessary to bring these additional sport opportunities to our students. The district is currently working to secure equipment, hire coaches, and seek an appropriate conference within which they will schedule games.
Middle School Sports Initiative
Mike Ashley is the Area Director for TreeHouse in Bloomington. He joined TreeHouse in 2017, but has been actively working with teens since 1997. With teens of his own, Mike is well aware that teens relate to things differently than adults. Just being in the process of maturing is one reason. It is important for teens to have positive people interacting positively with them. TreeHouse is on a mission to end hopelessness among teens. In a survey of TreeHouse teens, 49% felt hopeless. With hopelessness being significantly present with teens, TreeHouse provides a safe place for young people dealing with pain causing risky behavior to find listening and caring adults. 93% of these same teens said that they felt that a loving, caring adult through TreeHouse cared about them. Mike gave us an example they use in conversation with their teens. It uses an Emotions grid to en- courage a person to express how they felt during the day and then explore the reasons behind the feeling expressed. Listening and being engaged and interested are skills their leaders use. There are three truths TreeHouse wants teens to believe. 1) I am loveable. 2) I am loved without strings and never alone. 3) I have a future. When teens start believing what is true and possible, it changes everything. Meaningful relationships help teens realize their true value. Treehouse: Building Relationships One Teen at a Time
We had an opportunity to hear about how Bloomington is working to be a more inclusive and equitable city. Staff from both the city and the school district joined us to share the many efforts toward this end that are taking place throughout our community. The city launched a department last June specifically to increase opportunities for our diverse population. A new Welcome to Bloomington program invites new residents to quarterly meetings to inform them of programs and resources that are available. An annual Cultural Fair engages a multigenerational audience. A new Bloomington Bucket List will encourage new residents to participate in events and visit the many interesting places in and around Bloomington. Rotarians had a number of suggestions to add to that list. A special program called Bloom in Bloomington is designed to encourage diverse 16 to 24 year old youth to join the workforce through eight or twelve-week internships. Both the city and the schools are partnering together to facilitate these opportunities. Employers are encourage to apply to host an intern. Also, the abandoned Fire Station #3 building is being proposed for a Business Development Center to house a variety of business resources for small business entrepreneurs. We learned that 47 % of our school students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program and 55% of students are of racial/ethnic background. But, only 14% of our staff is multiracial. The schools are working to encourage more diverse students to go into education as a field of study with Intro to Edu- cation as a class choice available to them.

Jim Doyle is an author, speaker, and facilitator of high impact learning and development. Jim's inspiring message helps others be their best self by learning to pivot in life. Jim is a veteran corporate HR guy and consultant, a breadwinner who has worked for several Twin Cities companies and has known insecurity and the anxiety of being out of a job. He has experienced pain as a parent watching his adult children struggle with life. As a professional, he knows how to coach, connect and present to a group or one on one. And he still exudes a youthful outlook and curiosity. Jim has published two books: Hope for Life, and The Business Coach.

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) is a leading citizen organization working to protect and enhance the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The Mississippi River is one of the great rivers of the world and a complex ecosystem of global significance. It's also our hometown river and the heart of a cultural landscape that has, for generations, held great meaning for residents of this place from many cultures. Thanks to dedicated advocates, in recent decades the river is healthier and better appreciated but numerous threats remain. For more than 35 years Whitney Clark has worked to improve Minnesota’s environment as a staff member for several environmental organizations. During his 26-year tenure as executive director of FMR, he has led FMR’s growth from a start-up group with one full-time employee to one of Minnesota’s largest and most effective conservation organizations with a staff of 24. Whitney has extensive experience in environmental policy, lobbying, advocacy and education campaigns and partnership building around environmental and social justice issues. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from the U of M.

The Twin Cities Film Festival (TCFF) is the gateway for movie lovers into American Independent Cinema from across the country. They are dedicated to the cultivation of local filmmakers by providing educational resources to expand filmmaking skills; by providing a base for networking within the film industry; and by nurturing distribution opportunities. It is a 10-day film festi-val highlighting both in person and online viewing opportunities for films. It will be held October 19 to 28, 2023, at the Showplace ICON Theaters in St. Louis Park. Jatin Setia is the Executive Director of TCFF. As a recipient of ’40 under 40′ Award as well as ‘MN Real Power 50’, Jatin has been recognized by the community as a business leader and innovator. With the Twin Cities Film Fest, Jatin has brought the community together in a cele-bration of the arts it deserves. Jatin currently serves as a Board Member of Discover St. Louis Park, SLP Business Council and the TC Actor Expo. Being part of the Minnesota arts and busi-ness community, he strives to provide a platform where social conversations, business, culture and arts can not only survive, but work collectively and thrive!

Founded in 1999, the Lewis Sports Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit community service organization dedicated to providing our youth with the tools to develop life skills through education and physical activity. By promoting physical activity and sports participation, they have been able to improve the abilities of your people to cope with the daily challenges of life. By enlisting the unique talents of local teachers, coaches and mentors, the Foundation provides students with the necessary resources to establish a balance between education, citizenship, life management, and sport.

In July, a case of vaccine derived polio type 2 was detected in the US, just weeks after the virus was detected in wastewater samples in the UK. Polio's return to areas that had been unaffected for decades, is a stark reminder that as long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere. Tim Mulcrone is the last remaining charter member of Chanhassen Rotary founded in 1987. He served three times as President and, on many Club, and District committees. Since 2012, he has been District 5950’s Polio Chair. Tim always has the latest info on Rotary’s flagship initiative, the worldwide eradication of polio. 2022 Rotary Veterans Day Luncheon
Bloomington Remembers Veterans is a 501c3 non-profit estab- lished in 2018 for the purpose of raising funds for the construc- tion of a veterans memorial on the east lawn of Bloomington Civic Plaza. (Clockwise from upper left) Terry Collins is the Board President. Michael Bjornberg specializes in historic preservation and restoration of civic, public and academic facilities. Daniel Yudchitz is Director of Design. Matthew Rentsch is a licensed landscape architect with a passion for combining the disciplines of art, ecology architecture, and horticulture. The memorial will honor and pay tribute to people who served in all branches of military service. It will be a place for remembrance, reflection and education as well as a site for larger events honoring people who served in the military. An educational component will be designed to share the context of why these conflicts occurred and to highlight the personal stories of some veterans to better understand the journey and sacrifice of these men and women.

The new school year has gotten off to a good start. Our students are anxious to make this a very successful year of learning. How is our district working to make this a reality? What are the newest strategies being incorporated? How does technology help and what is new in this area? And, why is the current referendum for safety and technology so important? Our guests are Dr. Jenna Mitchler, Assistant Superintendent of the Bloomington Public Schools and John Weisser, Executive Director, Tech- nology and Information Services. Jenna has been an educational practi- tioner for nearly 20 years. She has led a variety of departments, has pub- lished research on culture and public education and is certified in Ad- vanced Educational Leadership. Ask Jenna about her educational experi- ence in Africa sometime. John has been with the school district for 29 years, 6 as a math teacher, 11 helping teachers incorporate technology into their teaching, and the remainder in his current role.

Bethany Esse is Co-President of the Twin Cities Rotary EcoClub and a Men-tor with Climate Re-ality Leadership Corporation. She is a Climate Reality Leader committed to spreading awareness of the climate crisis and to working for solutions to the greatest challenge of our time. She was trained with over 900 other citizen activists in March of 2017 in Denver and served as a mentor for the Minneapolis Climate Reality Leadership Corps training in August of 2019. Bethany’s goal is to tell the story of climate change and to inspire com-munities everywhere to take action. She will cover the causes of climate change, the impact it is having on our world, and the solutions that are available to halt, and reverse, global warming.
Solutions to the Greatest Challenge of Our Time
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is a state agency commit-ted to ensuring that every Minnesotan has healthy air, sustainable lands, clean water, and a better climate. Through the authority of state and federal statutes and guidelines, the Agency focuses on preventing and reducing the pollution of air, land, and water, and leads Minnesota’s efforts to protect against the devastating effects of climate change. The MPCA has released its draft solid waste permit for Waste Management’s Burnsville Sanitary Landfill. Beth Gawrys & Cliff Shierk work for the MPCA and will be speaking about the Burnsville Sanitary Landfill Solid Waste Permit. The public comment period is open until September 6th. This is a timely topic for Bloomington residents. The Permit if approved would allow for an expansion of the landfill’s disposal capacity and regulate waste disposal activities for the next 10 years. More than 80 percent of the solid waste entering the Burnsville Sanitary Landfill comes from Hennepin and Dakota County. Solid waste forecasts expect that the need for landfill disposal will continue to increase.

Service Above Self was Lloyd’s motto long before joining the Rotary Club of Glenwood, Minnesota, on July 19, 2012. After joining Rotary in Glenwood, Lloyd took an active role in developing its website and bulletin, serving as international committee chair, and re-establishing the Youth Exchange Pro-gram in Glenwood. He eventually served as club president. Lloyd received the Service Above Self Award two times, Rotarian of the Year award, and the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Glenwood Chamber of Commerce. On the District level, Lloyd served as Member of the International Grant Committee, District Grants committee, a facilitator for PETS, and served two years as district membership chair. Lloyd is married to Dr. Rwanda Campbell. They have two sons. Dr. Rwanda Campbell is a member of the Rotary Club of Minnesota Veterans.
