Four Avenues of Service

Club Service focuses on strengthening
fellowship and ensuring the smooth
functioning of Rotary clubs. Learn about
effective club service in Membership and
Training.

Vocational Service involves club members
serving others through their professions
and aspiring to high ethical standards.
Rotarians, as business leaders, share
skills and expertise through their vocations,
and they inspire others in the process.

Community Service is the opportunity
Rotary clubs have to implement club
projects and activities that improve life in
the local community.

International Service encompasses efforts
to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach
around the world and to promote world
understanding and peace. It includes
everything from contributing to PolioPlus to
helping Rotary Youth Exchange students
adjust to their host countries.

“Public Health – What’s happening
in Your Back Yard?”
Guest:
Karen Zeleznak
February 13th, 2012  - 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Bloomington Airport Hilton
Did you know that Bloomington is one of only four cities in
Minnesota who has a public health department?  What does
that mean for our City?  Rotarian Karen Zeleznak will talk about
the public health services they provide and the new community
health initiatives that are helping make “the healthy choice the
easy choice” in Bloomington.

Ms. Zeleznak has served as the Public Health Administrator for
the City of Bloomington (smoke –free since 2004) since 1999.
Prior to that, she worked for 18 years for Washington County
Department of Health and Environmental Services in a variety of program areas.

Her current responsibilities include managing a public health division with a service area
covering three cities (Bloomington, Edina and Richfield) and a population of 165,000
residents.  The major program areas in the division are: communicable disease control,
clinical services, family health, health promotion and planning and emergency
preparedness.  The public health division is known for having strong working relationship
with other city departments, including environmental services, emergency management,
police, human services, and with our other community partners, especially the local school
districts.
Ms. Zeleznak holds Masters Degrees in Public Health and in Education.  She loves being
out in nature.  She enjoys backpacking with her husband of 26 years – their next trip is in
April, to Grand Gulch, Utah.  She is an active member of the State Community Health
Services Advisory Committee, the Minnesota Local Public Health Association, and
Bloomington Noon Rotary Club.
