Four Avenues of Service

Club Service focuses on strengthening
fellowship and ensuring the smooth
functioning of Rotary clubs. Learn about
effective club service in Membership and
Training.

Vocational Service involves club members
serving others through their professions
and aspiring to high ethical standards.
Rotarians, as business leaders, share
skills and expertise through their vocations,
and they inspire others in the process.

Community Service is the opportunity
Rotary clubs have to implement club
projects and activities that improve life in
the local community.

International Service encompasses efforts
to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach
around the world and to promote world
understanding and peace. It includes
everything from contributing to PolioPlus to
helping Rotary Youth Exchange students
adjust to their host countries.

“Peace Corps in Africa”
Guest: Andrea R. Heftya
June 15th, 2009 - 12:00 PM
For 2 years Andrea Hefty was a member of the Peace Corps in Africa.
Andrea will share her personal story of living in Mama-Kopé, a small
agricultural village in Togo, West Africa. She provided health education
and aided the village development committee in their quest for a reliable
clean water source. As a Community Health and AIDS Prevention
volunteer, an American, and a female, she will discuss how these
characteristics helped her integrate, or not integrate, into a culture very
different from her own. Peace Corps is primarily a program for cultural
exchange. With this in mind, she hopes to provide a window into
Togolese culture for you through Mama-Kopé’s stories and faces. Andrea
is a graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield MN. Her BA is in Biology,
with a Biomedical Studies Concentration.
Upcoming Program
“Leadership…The Power of One”
Guest: James (Jim) McCarty
June 22nd, 2009 - 12:00 PM
Jim McCarty is the former Senior Executive Vice President of Ecolab,
Inc. Ecolab is a St. Paul, MN based company with Global sales of
approximately $6 billion dollars.

Jim began his career with Ecolab, with a high school education. His
first job was repairing dishwashers in restaurants and hotels. During
his 40 year career with Ecolab he was promoted to every line
management position in the organization. When he retired he was
responsible for 6 operating divisions, 6000+ associates, and
revenue of just under $2 billion dollars. He credits his rise to the
number 3 position in a company of 22,000+ people to his
supervisors and associates who taught him the things that he had
never learned formally. They lifted him up and…never put him down!

Jim will share thoughts on lessons of Leadership from Yesterday
and…how we can each take our own experiences and share them
with others so they might be better leaders tomorrow. Jim will give us
proven ideas to help us in our own personal journey.

You will leave Jim’s session with ideas that you will be able to put to
work for you and your own life or organization…the next day!
